Senior Management Team
Andrew Cleeland
President & CEO
Andrew has more than 20 years of experience in the medical device industry, including both private and public sector roles. He started with the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration, progressed to large medtech companies in Telectronics Pacing Systems and Baxter Healthcare, then to two small private bay area companies, Radiant Medical and Ardian, Inc. Andrew holds a Bachelor of Applied Science (Biophysics) from the Swinburne Institute of Technology.
Craig Straley
Vice President, Clinical Affairs
Craig has been conducting clinical research for more than 13 years. He began his career in the medical device industry at Telectronics Pacing Systems in Denver. He transitioned into the start-up environment in the Bay Area with a move to Prograft/Gore & Associates and then to Radiant Medical before joining Ardian Inc. Craig earned both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s Degree in Biomedical Engineering from Duke University.
Denise (Demarais) Zarins
Co-founder & Vice President, R&D
Denise, a co-founder of Ardian, Inc., brings with her more than 13 years of experience in the medical device industry. Denise’s previous experience includes AneuRx, which was acquired by Medtronic, followed by Bacchus Vascular, where she was the third employee and remained committed through commercialization. Most recently, Denise held an Entrepreneur in Residence position at The Foundry prior to co-founding Ardian, Inc. Denise holds a Master of Science (Biomedical Engineering) degree from Marquette University.
Gregory Bakan
Vice President, Sales & Marketing
Greg has worked in the medical device field for over 18 years in a variety of marketing, strategic planning, clinical, project management and business development roles. Prior to joining Ardian, Greg served as Vice President of Marketing and Sales for Emphasys Medical, a developer of a minimally invasive devices to treat patients with emphysema. Prior to Emphasys, Greg worked at Fox Hollow Technologies, Eli Lilly & Co., Guidant, Johnson & Johnson and Medtronic. Greg holds a B.A. in Biology from the University of California, San Diego, and an M.B.A. from the University of Michigan.
Karun D. Naga
Vice President, Intellectual Property & Legal Affairs
Karun, a registered patent attorney, has been with Ardian since January, 2007. Karun began his career with the law firms Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison and Jones Day. He then left private practice to join Mentor Corporation as its first in-house intellectual property counsel. More recently, Karun was affiliated with The Foundry, a medical device incubator, where he served on the founding team of Miramar Labs. Karun holds a BS in mechanical engineering from Michigan State University, a JD from the University of Michigan Law School and an MBA from The Wharton School of The University of Pennsylvania.
Paul A. Sobotka, MD
Chief Medical Officer
Along with his responsibilities at Ardian, Paul is currently a Professor of Medicine, Division of Cardiology - The Ohio State University and Associate Director of the Berman Center for Clinical and Outcomes Research. Previously, Paul has served as Vice-Chair of Medicine at Detroit Medical Center/Wayne State University, CMO-CHF Solutions and Executive Medical Director at Merck pharmaceutical company. He has an extensive research and publication history, including over 100 peer reviewed research articles, book chapters and invited lectures. Paul’s medical training comes from the University of Illinois, University of Michigan and Northwestern University. He has complemented this with healthcare administration training at the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard School of Public Health.
Scott Wilson, PhD
Vice President, Regulatory Affairs & Quality Assurance
Scott has over 15 years experience in the medical device field. He has previously held positions with Mentor Corp, Inamed (now Allergan), Baxter Healthcare, and Radiant Medical, where he has been responsible for obtaining approvals for clinical studies and commercial use. Along with regulatory affairs expertise, Scott has experience developing and improving quality systems to ensure compliance with both US and international requirements. Scott holds BA and PhD degrees in Political Science from UC Berkeley and UC Santa Barbara, respectively.
Timothy D. Kahlenberg
Chief Financial Officer
Tim has served as Ardian’s Chief Financial Officer since April 2009 and has worked in the life sciences field for over twenty years. Prior to joining Ardian, Tim served as Chief Financial Officer for XTENT Inc., a developer of next generation drug eluting stents for patients with coronary and peripheral artery disease. Prior to XTENT, Tim worked at LuMend, AneuRx, Medtronic, Guidant and Eli Lilly & Co. Tim holds a B.S. in Quantitative Business Analysis and an M.B.A. in Finance and Tax from Indiana University.
